Harlow

"Good night, Harlow." I hear his voice, and my eyes flutter open. I take a second to blink the sleep away from my eyes before reaching over and grabbing my phone off the bedside table. "Eight forty-seven," I groan as I turn over to my other side, facing the wall and then looking at my phone as I open my Instagram app. My tongue feels like it’s got little cotton balls on it.

The first picture that pops up is the picture we took at the bar last night. My eyes go straight to Travis, who stands beside me, and then all I can think about is our kiss. The kiss I’ve been dying to get for months. The kiss I’ve dreamed about. The kiss that just thinking about it gives me all the butterflies in the world. The kiss I would probably tell my cousins about. But what I wasn’t expecting was the kiss that would end all fucking kisses. I felt it all the way down to my bones. My head kept spinning around and around as his tongue slipped in with mine. I kept telling myself it was the alcohol in me. I kept making one excuse after another. I hadn’t been kissed in a long time, and he was a good kisser. I liked him. It was cold outside. It was only when I walked into the apartment and shut the door did I admit that this was the kiss I would be telling everyone in my life about. That kiss would ruin it for all other men.

I close down the phone when my heart gets a sudden little ping of regret that he didn’t come in with me. Walking to the bathroom, I wash my face and brush my teeth before heading to the kitchen and making a coffee.

The coffee starts brewing when I walk over to the window in the corner and look out. The gray clouds in the sky make it a great day for staying in bed. I turn to walk back to the kitchen when the machine stops at the same time as one of the bedroom doors opens. My eyes go to the hallway, where I see Jake walking out with Lydia following him.

His shoes are in his hand as Lydia looks down, and when Jake's eyes land on me, he stops walking. "Hey," he greets, and my eyes just go wide.

"Morning," I say, looking over at Lydia, who just glares at me.

"Well, I’ll be going," Jake says and turns toward Lydia. It looks like he’s going to go in for a kiss when she puts her hand to his forehead and pushes him away.

"Go," she tells him, and he smirks at me, then walks out of the apartment. When the door closes behind him, I look over at Lydia, who holds up her hand.

"What happened to the saying ‘don’t eat where you shit’?" I remind her when I said that Travis was cute. "Don’t go there, I believe you said. It’s not a great idea because he’s part of your social circle.
